BFA 'Windows and Doors' Series

Enlightenment from BFA series.

As a photographer creative inspiration comes in many forms. My artistic vision does not stem from one intrinsic point. Rather, it is a collection of ideas, experiences, emotions and questions. Much of my photographic work is influenced by the past. Often small details will influence my photography. The texture of my mother’s old satin dress, the color of the sky in a snapshot, or even the movement of a person running through a Super-8 film reel can be ideas that I will spark a series of work. Just as tangible objects influence me, I am equally influenced by what is unseen. Through photography I continue to question the past, and the reality of the world that I live in today. By exploring themes of memory, reality and identity I am able to continue to grow as a photographer, artist and individual.

Cartoon Bridezilla

I processed this photo in an editorial cartoon style that has become popular. I took the concept of bridezilla, and cartoon-ized it in raw processing, multiple layers and toning. I also smoothed the skin and brought out the eyes and playing with focused areas to add to the cartoon feeling.

BFA 'Windows and Doors' Series

This piece, Absence is from my BFA series Windows and Doors. This body of work is dealing with memory. The windows and doors being a medium through which one can draw upon their memories.

This piece was created through digital photography merged together in Photoshop with the use of my layering process. I feel that the layers of Photoshop can be a simile of the layers of memory.

Composite and Caricatures

These are two images I worked while at Rubberball Productions. The first is one of a many that I worked where I composited two images together in Photoshop to create the realistic look that the man is literally crawling on a rat wheel. The Second image is a Caricature. Rubberball is one of the first companies to start creating digital composite caricatures. This caricature that I created in photoshop was done by using five different images and blending them smoothly and realistically into one image creating the 'bobble head' effect.

BFA 'Windows and Doors' Series

Periodically I will be posting works from my BFA series 'Windows and Doors'. This body of work is dealing with memory. The windows and doors being a medium through which one can draw upon their memories. As I post more works from this series I will include my artist statement for the body of work. This piece 'Reflection' was created through Medium format film and digital photography merged together in Photoshop with the use of my layering process. I feel that the layers of Photoshop can be a simile of the layers of memory.

Ophelia

This is my take on Shakespeare's Ophelia. She is a moving and haunting figure and I wanted to create something equality haunting in my imagery. The Small picture is the before and after pictures (you can click on the picture to see the detail). In the final image I took out most the color of her skin (to portray a lifeless look) and I took out distracting details so the viewer can focus on the figure and her story. Photo by Emily Jeanne

"[She] Fell in the weeping brook. Her clothes spread wide;
And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up:
Which time she chanted snatches of old tunes;
As one incapable of her own distress,
Or like a creature native and indued
Unto that element: but long it could not be
Till that her garments, heavy with their drink,
Pull'd the poor wretch from her melodious lay
To muddy death".

J. Andrew Livingston

These pictures are work that I did for a musican for his press photo and CD cover. The photoshopped CD cover used about 11 different layers giving it a Hockney type effect. This was a fun collaboration and a great opportunity to do something different.

This is an animated gif showing a glimpse of my layering process.

Decomposition of All Things

These images are a series of photos that I did relating to the idea of decomposition. In our lives people come in and out. Our old friends and selves change and fall away. Memories fade and we are left with small snatches of the past slowly decomposing.These illustrations were created using multiple layers of photoshop. Using Holga, Polariod, and digital photographic images. and blended together to create the feeling of decomposing memories.
